Weekend Roundup

This past weekend was a busy one for the various Roller Derby leagues in the Nations Capital. Ottawa Roller Derby hosted the Kingston Derby Girls' Disloyalists on Saturday, the Capital City Derby Dolls took on West End Waywards Derby Association's Rollergettes on Saturday, and then faced off against the Rideau Valley Rollergirls' travel team, the Vermin, in an exhibition match in the town of Beachburg the very next day.

We'll start the roundup with a look at ORD as they hosted KDG. The event took place at Brewer Arena, right across the street from Carleton University. The home team debuted 3 fresh meat players in their first ever match, but were ultimately defeated 135-38.

The first bout of the weekend for CCDD was up against the Rollergettes, who travelled up from Toronto to take part in the match. The 'gettes came short-handed, only able to put 9 skaters on the track due to injuries to two of their players. The game was almost tied going into the halftime break, with 62-61 showing on the scoreboard in favour of the Dolls, but the amount of time each 'gette had to spend on the track took its toll in the second half. The Dolls quickly took control, and started wracking up the points. Biggest jam of the night went to #69 Cluster Bomb, who hit 23 points in a full 2 minute Power Jam.
The final in the match was 164-100.

The next day, the Dolls travelled to the tiny town of Beachburg, which lies almost 2 hours north of the city. There, they met the powerhouse Rideau Valley Rollergirls. RVRG brought their travel team, the Vermin, which contained a mix of skaters from their 3 home teams. Included in the lineup were Da Big Block, Semi Precious, and Screaming Mini Massacre, who are three of the Slaughter Daughters top blockers. The void between these two leagues was evident as they rolled over the Dolls as if they werent even there.
It was a master class in pack control as they ran the Dolls's jammers ragged, and more than 5 jams went by before they were even able to break through the pack to get their first attempt at a scoring pass. Every point the Dolls earned were met with cheers from the near capacity crowd at the Beachburg Arena.
The game ended with a crushing 408 - 19 scoreline.

The only injury of the night was the Dolls' captain, Delicate Plow'Her, who appeared to get a concussion from an elbow to the eye, and was rushed to hospital. She made it home safe and sound later that evening, and was reportedly in good spirits. We wish her a speedy recovery.

  1. Vermin isn't the RVRG travel team (that's actually called the "Vixens") "Vermin" is just a rotating mix of players from the entire league including league skaters that aren't on either of the 2 home teams.
