Weekend Recap

As mentioned in the previous post, there were two away fixtures this weekend, and here are the results of the matches.

The first of the bouts saw a Rideau Valley Roller Girl mixed squad travel to Sudbury, Ontario, to face off against the Nickle City Roller Derby's Sister Slag. RVRG came home victorious, having run the total to 197 vs the Sister Slag's 25.

In the weekend's other match, Capital City Roller Derby's Dolly Rogers made a visit to Syracuse, to face off against Assault City Roller Derby's Battery Brigade. In another fairly one sided match, the Dolls were downed 178-52.
The scoreline was a pretty good indicator of the difference in experience between the two sets of players. The Doll's inexperience showed on the track, mainly in their decision making and pack work. The girls from the Battery Brigade skated together as a cohesive unit, both defensively and offensively. Any gaps made by the Dolls in their efforts to aid their jammer were quickly exploited by her opposite number who often breezed through without having to slow down.
That's not to take anything away from their effort. The Dolls put their all into the match, and if they can put what they've learned from this bout into practice, it will make them a better team on the track. Their second half performance was definitely better than the first half, so their coaching staff had already begun to provide positive feedback.

Episode Release Delayed

Due to Mothers Day and a couple other issues that crept up during the week, I am delaying the release of Episode 2 until Wednesday. Sorry for the extra wait, but it couldnt be helped.

RVRG Release Home Bouting Schedule

The Rideau Valley Roller Girls released their Summer/Fall 2011 Home Schedule last week. The full listing can be found on their Facebook page.

First up on their list is a bout at the Blackburn Arena, on Saturday May 28. This is a "Coaches Pick" type matchup where players are selected from 3 of their teams rather than a set matchup between specific teams.

I will, unfortunately, be unable to attend due to commitments out of town, but if I can get someone to fill in as an on-location reporter, there just might be some quotes and interviews. More to come on that later.

RVRG's Slaughter Daughters take Beast of the East

Although Ottawa Derbycast was unable to attend Beast of the East this year, we certainly want to put out our congratulations to the Rideau Valley Roller Girls for their successful campaign through the weekend tournament as the Slaughter Daughters went through the rounds undefeated to be named tournament champions.

CCDD's Cherry Poppin' Bout

Ottawa Derbycast was at the Cherry Poppin' Bout put on by the Capital City Derby Dolls last night. Their travel team, the Dolly Rogers took on Kingston's CrusHers at Jack Charron Arena, in Kanata.

The CrusHers (who are incredibly new as a league, and managed to work overtime getting their skaters ready for the bout in just over 2 weeks of full match practice) put up a valliant effort, but ultimately went down 228 to 103 against a much stronger Dolly Rogers.

We talked to the captains before and after the bout to get their thoughts on the evening, which will hopefully be included in the next episode of the podcast.

The after party was at Broadways, on Stonehaven, and it was great to see all the girls celebrating their victory.
