Ottawa Returns From 2Fresh 2Furious Defeated

The combined Ottawa Roller Derby/Timmins Roller Derby Girls (not to be confused with the Gold Miner's Daughters - also from Timmins - who won the tournament)/Soonami Slammers team made their way through the initial phase of the tournament with a loss and a win but were eliminated in the next round by a determined Gold Miners Daughters.

Meanwhile, in the other arena, the Capital City Derby Dolls/Limestone CrusHers mixed team, the Dollinquents, lost their first two matches in the Double Elimination round of the tournament, and were forced to watch the remainder of the tournament from the incredibly comfy snack area/beer garden overlooking the arena floor.

The ORD mixed team faced a strong Royal City Roller Derby (Guelph) travel team, the Queens of Pain, in their first bout, and were hit hard for a 15 to 99 final score. A fair number of the Queens skaters had recently done battle here in Ottawa during Blood Spill on the Hill, where their team came in 5th over all, and their experience shone bright. The ORD mixed team suffered from having 5 players from each of the three leagues, who all met each other for the first time less than an hour before they suited up, and were not able to gel together in the short 20 minute bout. The unfortunate result of a combination of these two factors allowed the Queens to wrack up a lot of points in their limited track time.

They then faced off against another of the teams that had lost their first match, the Electric City Rollers from Peterborough, Ontario. Faring far better this time, they managed to defeat ECR 56 to 24, putting an end to their tournament.

Their third bout of the day saw them paired up against the eventual tournament winners, the Gold Miners Daughters where they were defeated by a score of 48 to 23.

The Derby Dolls/CrusHers combination started their tournament against the host league's Chrome Mollys. It was a tight, physical match where the score with one jam left was as close as 24 to 33. But 12 unanswered points in the final jam lead to a 45 to 24 final score.

Their second bout saw them face off against the Border City Brawlers, from Windsor, Ontario. The Dollinquents put up an admirable effort in another physical match, and their captain Violently Jill played the enforcer roll quite well, often tying up the opposing jammer at the back of the pack while her own jammer was free to make her way through and score some much needed points. Ultimately, though, they lost the match 53 to 47.

A full writeup of the tournament's activities can be found, as always, on the Derby Nerd site.

Ottawa Derbycast was on hand to get interviews during the tournament, but our host (the Emir of Istanbul) was there as a volunteer NSO, and spent a lot of the time in the center of the rink in the main arena. He was on the track for both Dollinquents bouts, and thus was able to easily speak to the bout's captains, and managed to also work the track in the Bubble where ORD played for their first bout. However, as the Bubble bouts fell further and further behind in the schedule, we were not able to attend the remaining ORD bouts due to conflicts on the track.
